ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Concordia-Moorhead broke a 1-1 tie with two goals during a five-minute major power play in the third period and defeated Saint John's 4-2 on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.
The Cobbers (3-5, 1-2 MIAC) out-shot the Johnnies (2-2-2, 1-1-1 MIAC) by a 19-4 margin in the third period, of which 14 of the shots came on a man advantage. SJU was whistled for two five-minute major penalties in the third period and was on the penalty kill for a total of 12 minutes in the final frame.
CC entered the game at 7.7 percent (2-for-26) on the power play and finished 3-for-7 Saturday night. SJU held a 22-19 edge in shots after the first two periods.
Junior defenseman
Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.) put SJU on the scoreboard first with a power-play goal, his third tally of the season, 8:31 into the game.
Christian Cakebread tied the game with a power-play goal of his own with 5:38 left in the second period before the Cobbers took advantage of the third period's first five-minute major penalty with a pair of goals 55 seconds apart (SJU killed off the first 4:05 of the man advantage).
Junior defenseman
Troy Dobbs (Lancaster, N.Y.) cut the Johnnies' deficit to one (3-2) with his first collegiate goal at the 13:45 mark of the third period.
The Cobbers, however, tacked on an empty-net goal with seven seconds remaining to seal the win.
Senior goaltender
Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 34 saves in the loss.
