No. 12 SJU Basketball Wins MIAC Opener, 79-60

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's basketball opened its conference and home schedule with a 79-60 win over Carleton on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Sexton Arena.

The Johnnies (3-1, 1-0 MIAC) shot 60 percent (18-for-30) and turned five offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points to build a 40-32 halftime lead.

SJU opened the second with an 18-3 run (26-6 including the final 2:38 of the first half) and led by as much as 15 the rest of the way.

Senior wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong), the reigning MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week, continued his impressive play with 26 points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots in 26 minutes. He finished 11 of 15 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range, and is now 29 points from becoming the 38th Johnnie to reach 1,000 for a career.



Junior post Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) followed with 11 points and four assists in 18 minutes. Junior wing Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva) was the other Johnnie in double figures with 10 points, all of which came in the first half, and chipped in four assists.

Alex Battist led Carleton (1-1, 0-1 MIAC) with 24 points and nine rebounds.

SJU is now 36-11 in its first home game of the season since the Warner Palaestra opened (1973-74), including wins in nine of last 10. The Johnnies are also 35-12 in their conference opener (4-1 against Carleton) during that span, including a 25-3 record when the first MIAC game is played in Collegeville. 

The Johnnies travel to face Saint Mary's for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Winona.
