Big Night at the Free-Throw Line Carries No. 14 SJU to 77-63 Win

WINONA, Minn. – No. 14 Saint John's basketball overcame a frigid shooting night with a 37-for-44 showing from the free-throw line in a 77-63 win at Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Winona.

The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but was moved up to a 5:30 p.m. start due to the impending snowstorm.

The Johnnies (4-1, 2-0 MIAC) shot 36.2 percent (17-for-47) from the field, but made up for it by shooting 84.1 percent from the charity stripe. SMU (2-1, 1-1 MIAC) committed 31 fouls, including 22 in the second half as SJU went 30 of 35 from the free-throw line after intermission. 

SJU is now shooting 75.5 percent (74-for-98) from the line in five games this season.

The Cardinals trailed SJU by three (27-24) and tied the game at 33-33 with 16:01 to play, but the Johnnies responded with an 18-4 run and led by nine points or more for the remainder of the game for their 25th consecutive win in the series.

Senior wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led SJU with 21 points, his third consecutive 20-point game, thanks to an 11-for-13 showing at the line. He is now eight points away from becoming the 38th Johnnie to reach 1,000 for a career.

Junior post Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) followed with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half.

Senior post Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) posted his fourth double-double in five games this season with 10 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.

Eli Cave led all scorers with 23 points for SMU before he was ejected from the game following his second technical foul with 2:26 remaining.

The Johnnies return home to host Concordia-Moorhead at 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Sexton Arena.
