Johnnies Secure No. 4 Seed With 3-0 Win Over Carleton

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer ended its regular-season schedule with a 3-0 win over Carleton on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Haws Field.

The win, coupled with losses by Macalester and St. Olaf, gives SJU (10-7, 6-4 MIAC) the No. 4 seed and a home game against fifth-seeded Mac (7-6-4, 5-4-1 MIAC) at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals. The Johnnies defeated the Scots 3-2 in overtime earlier this season (Sept. 28) in Collegeville.

The third-seeded Knights (13-4-1, 6-3-1 MIAC) will host the Oles in Tuesday's other quarterfinal.

Freshman defender Matt Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) scored a pair of goals off corner kicks, his second and third tallies of the season, in the win. The first, a nice corner-feed from senior forward Patrick Erredge (St. Paul, Minn./Apple Valley), gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead 2:26 into the game. His second, in the 68th minute, padded the Johnnies' lead to 3-0. Freshman forward Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) sent a corner kick to the middle of the box where it found Anderson, who sent his own shot deflection to the back of the net.

Senior forward Kagan Foster (Alexandria, Minn.) scored the Johnnies' other goal, his team-leading 10th of the season, with 2:16 remaining in the first half. Senior midfielder Martin Cortes (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) lobbed a pass over midfield to Foster, who split two defenders and ripped a shot from the top of the box to the far post. Foster is the first Johnnie to score 10 goals in a season since Michael Coborn '14 in 2011.

Senior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made five saves to record his first shutout of the season (seventh of his career) and improve to 6-4 on the year. Carleton held slim statistical margins in shots (13-11), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (7-6).
