COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer advanced to the MIAC Playoff semifinals with a 4-2 shootout win over Macalester on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (10-7-1, 6-4-0 MIAC) travel to face top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus (15-3, 9-1 MIAC) for a 2 p.m. semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in St. Peter. The Gusties edged the Johnnies 3-2, with 2:11 left in the second overtime, earlier this season (Oct. 13) at Haws Field.
Following a scoreless tie, SJU head coach
John Haws brought in a cold
Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) to replace goalkeeper
Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.), who made five saves to post his second consecutive shutout.
The appearance in net was the first for French since he broke his thumb Oct. 16 at Augsburg. The 6-foot-5 keeper stretched out to stop the Scots' first two attempts, however, which proved to be the difference.
Junior midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) started a stretch of four consecutive shootout goals for SJU after senior forward
Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) was denied in the opening round. Freshman defender
Matt Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) and senior forward
Kagan Foster (Alexandria, Minn.) followed suit before senior forward
Patrick Erredge (St. Paul, Minn./Apple Valley) scored the clincher.
Mac out-shot SJU 19-9 (6-1 on goal) and posted statistical advantages in corners (13-4) and offsides (11-2).
The shootout win was the first for SJU since Nov. 2, 2005 (a 4-3 shootout victory following a scoreless tie at Gustavus). Current GAC head coach Tudor Flintham '06 was a senior on that Johnnie team.
