Johnnies Skate to Season-Opening Tie at No. 11 Eau Claire

Box Score

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Saint John's hockey opened its 2019-20 season with a 1-1 tie at No. 11 Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday night, Nov. 2, at Hobbs Ice Arena.

Senior forward Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) tied the game with his 35th career goal at the 14:22 mark of the second period, three minutes after he was denied on a penalty shot. A poke-check by junior defenseman Jake Dittel (St. Paul, Minn.) at the UWEC blue line created a 2-on-1 for freshman forward Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) and Heppner. The team's leading goal scorer the past two seasons skated from left to right in front of the net and slipped a shot through the five-hole.

Adam Parsells gave the Blugolds a quick 1-0 lead 3:41 into the game.

Senior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 36 saves in the tie, the teams' fourth in the last six meetings. The Johnnies and Blugolds combined for 21 penalties and a 0-for-15 showing on the power play.

SJU returns home to open conference play against Bethel at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
