SJU Rolls to 8-2 Win in MIAC Opener

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey scored six goals on its first eight shots on goal en route to an 8-2 win over Bethel in the Johnnies' home and MIAC opener on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Nine different Johnnies recorded a point, led by senior forward Kyle Wagner's (St. Francis, Minn.) four (1g/3a) on the night. Senior forward Brady Heppner (2g/1a; Crookston, Minn.) and junior defenseman Travis Brown (1g/2a; Otsego, Minn.) added three points apiece.

Heppner now has 20 points (10g/10a) in nine career games against Bethel.

Wagner started the scoring for SJU (1-0-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) 8:46 into the game before the Johnnies erupted for five goals over a 7:27 span across the first and second periods. The flurry included two goals from sophomore forward Davis Kirkendall (Hamel, Minn.) and the first for freshman forward Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.).

Blake Nelson erased the shutout with two second-period goals, including one on the man advantage, for BU (1-1-0, 0-1-0 MIAC).

Heppner tallied his second goal of the contest 3:53 into the third period and sophomore forward Jerome Newhouse (Shorewood, Minn.) ended the scoring with his first goal as a Johnnie with 3:54 remaining.

Senior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 24 saves to earn his 25th career win (25-15-8 record).

The two teams wrap up the weekend series at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Super Rink in Blaine.
