Oles Edge Johnnies in Double Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer endured its second double-overtime loss in a week with a 2-1 defeat to St. Olaf on Sunday, Oct. 20, in Collegeville.

A free kick near midfield backfired for SJU (8-6, 4-4 MIAC) as the deflection and STO counterattack turned into a sprint the other way for the Oles (8-6, 4-3 MIAC). Will Douglas side-stepped a Johnnie defender to his right near the top of the box and kicked a shot to the left post for the game-winning goal 2:20 into the second overtime.

Senior forward Kagan Foster (Alexandria, Minn.) gave the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead with his team-leading ninth goal of the season five minutes into the game. Junior defender Nicholas Devasia (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) sent a long ball to senior midfielder Martin Cortes (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt), who flicked it over to Foster for a header to the back of the net.

Foster's nine goals this season are the most by a Johnnie since Paul Wageman '16 recorded the same stat line (9g/2a) in 18 games as a senior in 2015.

The Oles tied the game on an own goal – a deflection off an SJU defender into the net – in the 35th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made five saves in the loss.

STO held a slight edge in shots, 17-14 (7-5 on goal) and totaled a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.

SJU dropped a 3-2 decision in double overtime to Gustavus Adolphus last Sunday (Oct. 13) in Collegeville and defeated St. Olaf 1-0 in double overtime last fall (Sept. 22, 2018) on the home pitch.

The Johnnies play host to Wisconsin-Superior for a 2 p.m. non-conference game this Saturday, Oct. 26, at Haws Field.
