COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 11 Saint John's basketball shot 77.8 percent (21-for-27) from the field in the second half en route to an 83-44 win over Concordia-Moorhead on Monday, Jan. 7, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (11-1, 7-0 MIAC) climbed eight spots to No. 11 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll released an hour before tonight's tip-off.
SJU missed 11 layups/shots in the paint in the first half and labored to a 10-point (32-22), halftime lead thanks to a defense that held CC (3-9, 2-5 MIAC) to 28.6 percent (8-for-28).
The tide turned in the second half, however, as the Johnnies dominated all phases of the game. In addition to the eye-popping 77.8 percent performance, SJU out-rebounded the Cobbers 23-5 and held them to 25 percent (7-for-28) in the final stanza.
The Johnnies entered the game leading NCAA Division III in both shooting percentage (.568) and three-point percentage (.448), and were second in rebound margin (+15.3 rpg.) and fifth in scoring margin (+22.5 ppg.). SJU finished at 57.6 percent (34-for-59) overall, 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from behind the arc, and registered a 45-24 edge on the glass (48-12 scoring advantage in the paint).
Senior guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) buried five three-pointers (5-for-8) and led all scorers with 23 points. The 20-point game was his third of the season and 20th of his career. The 23 points enabled Stokman to move past Paul Henrichs '06 for 13th in school history with 1,242 career points. He currently has 216 career three-pointers, 16 behind the school record held by former teammate
Patrick Strom '18.
Junior post
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) posted 14 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and eighth of his SJU career. Junior wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) collected 13 points and six rebounds.
Jordan Davis led CC with nine points, all in the first half. The Cobbers finished at 26.8 percent (15-for-56) from the floor.
SJU is now 77-35 against Concordia since the 1964-65 season, including a 49-7 record in Collegeville.
The Johnnies play host to Gustavus Adolphus for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Sexton Arena.
