No. 13 SJU Basketball Slams Saint Mary's, 89-58

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 13 Saint John's basketball returned to the win column with a commanding 89-58 on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Sexton Arena.

The Johnnies (14-3, 10-2 MIAC) out-rebounded the Cardinals 50-20, including a dominant 17-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The home team converted the 17 offensive boards to 23 second-chance points in the win, SJU's 51st consecutive victory at home (47-0 in the Warner Palaestra) over Saint Mary's. 

Junior post Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) led SJU with 15 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes of play. Junior wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.



SMU cut the Johnnies' 13-point lead to three (29-26) with 7:58 left in the first half, but SJU answered with a 21-7 run to take a 50-33 lead into the break. The Johnnies shot 63 percent (17-for-27) in the first half, including an 8-for-13 showing (61.5 percent) from behind the arc.

Senior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists in only 25 minutes of action. He played the first 5:20 of the second half before exiting with a 64-41 lead and did not return. 

The 11 points enabled Stokman to pass former teammate Alex Schmitt '16 for 11th on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,311 career points and is three behind Mike Nester '02 in 10th. Stokman went 3-for-6 from three-point range Wednesday night and is now one trey behind the school record of 232 held by another former teammate, Patrick Strom '18. 

Eli Cave led all scorers with 17 points for SMU (6-12, 2-11 MIAC), which shot 35.1 percent (20-for-57) from the field.

The Johnnies are now 87-21 against the Cardinals since the 1964-65 season, including a 54-1 record in Collegeville. The last time Saint Mary's defeated SJU in Collegeville was in 1968, when the Johnnies played in the Old Gym (Guild Hall).

SJU travels to face Hamline (9-9, 6-7 MIAC) for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 26, in St. Paul.
