SJU Drops Series Opener at Concordia, 2-1

MOORHEAD, Minn. - Two second-period, power-play goals proved to be the difference in a 2-1 loss for Saint John's Friday, Jan. 18, at Concordia-Moorhead.

Aaron Herdt tied the game for Concordia (11-5-2, 7-1-1 MIAC) with his 13th goal of the year 3:44 into the second period and Mario Bianchi made it 2-1 with his 13th tally of the season at the 15:17 mark.

The Cobbers entered the game with NCAA Division III's second-best combined special teams at 60 percent (81-for-135).

Freshman forward Davis Kirkendall (Hamel, Minn.) gave SJU (7-8-3, 5-3-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of his career 6:49 into the game. Sophomore forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) won the offensive-zone faceoff back to sophomore defenseman Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.), who unleashed a shot toward the net that Kirkendall redirected for the goal.

Junior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 26 saves, all in the first two periods, in the loss.

CC finished at 2-for-3 on the power play, while SJU was 0-for-2.

The Johnnies and Cobbers conclude the weekend series at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in Moorhead.
