Top-Ranked UW-Stevens Point Pulls Away from SJU

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Saint John's hockey ended its weekend trip to Wisconsin with a 4-1 loss at No. 1 Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Following a scoreless 20 minutes, UWSP (17-0-2 overall) book-ended the second period with goals to gain a 2-0 lead. Colin Raver put the home team on the board one minute into the frame and Stephan Beauvais padded the advantage with a shorthanded tally at the 18-minute mark.

Senior forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) cut SJU's (7-7-3 overall) deficit in half with a power-play goal, his sixth tally of the season, 2:29 into the third period. Junior defenseman Adam Orn (Ramsey, Minn.) and senior defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) assisted on the one-timer.

Ryan Bittner padded Stevens Point's lead with 7:21 remaining, 24 seconds after a Pointer power play expired, and Beauvais ended the scoring with an empty-netter with 1:10 left.

Sophomore goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) stopped 16 shots in the loss.

UWSP held a 20-16 edge in shots on goal and was 0-for-4 on the power play. SJU was 1-for-5 on the man advantage (2-for-10 on the weekend).

The Johnnies return to conference play with a pair of games at Concordia (10-5-2, 6-1-1 MIAC) next weekend at the Moorhead Sports Center. The two teams open the series with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Jan. 18, followed by a 2 p.m. puck-drop on Saturday, Jan. 19.
