SJU Suffers Season's First Loss, 1-0

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's soccer suffered its first loss of the season, 1-0, at Augsburg on Tuesday night, Sept. 25, at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.

Lionel Vang scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for Augsburg (6-1-0, 3-0-0 MIAC) on a penalty kick with 15:32 left in the first half. The goal was the first allowed by junior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.), ending his shutout streak at 410:48.

Freshman forward Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono), the overtime hero in Saturday's 1-0 Homecoming win over St. Olaf, hit the post in the 73rd minute for SJU (5-1-1, 2-1-0 MIAC).

SJU out-shot Augsburg, 19-10 (4-2 on goal), including an 11-2 advantage in the second half. Spencer made one save in the loss.

The Johnnies return home to host Bethel for a 3:30 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
