COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer returned to the win column with a 3-0 shutout of Bethel on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
Sophomore midfielder
Gabriel Leon's (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) first collegiate goal, 19:08 into the contest, proved to be the game-winning goal for SJU (6-1-1, 3-1-0 MIAC). Freshman forward
Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) created a breakaway up the left side and sent a cross to Leon, who beat the goalkeeper off the dribble.
The Johnnies broke open the game with insurance goals in the 72nd and 81st minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season on a deceptive play by junior forward
Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels). Becker faked a touch on a cross from senior defender
Andrew Weiler (Rosemount, Minn.) and let the ball continue on, where it found Wadsworth at the far post.
Wadsworth and Weiler found the scoresheet again with helpers on Mohs' third goal of the season nine minutes later.
Junior goalkeeper
Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made six saves to earn the shutout, his first of the season and fifth of his career, and improve to 3-0 on the year.
SJU out-shot BU (3-8-0, 0-4-0 MIAC) 19-8, including a 10-6 edge on net, and posted a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Johnnies travel to face No. 16 St. Thomas (6-2-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) for a 3:30 p.m. game Tuesday, Oct. 2, in St. Paul. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 15 but was postponed due to the heat and humidity.
