Becker's Hat Trick Carries SJU to Overtime Win

Box Score

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Junior forward Ben Becker's (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) third goal of the game, 5:54 into overtime, gave Saint John's a 3-2 win at NAIA Jamestown (N.D.) on Sunday, Sept. 2.

The game-winning goal was set up by a Jamestown foul five yards into the Johnnies' defensive half of the field. SJU (1-0-1 overall) packed the offensive zone and junior goalkeeper Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) sent the dead ball into the box, where Becker executed a perfect redirect to the back of the net.

Becker entered the contest with one goal in 23 career games (scored on Sept. 10, 2016, at Wartburg).

He scored SJU's first goal of the season by pressuring the Jimmies' goalkeeper in the 35th minute. The keeper attempted to clear the ball, but the effort glanced off Becker, who possessed the turnover beat both the netminder and a defender for the 1-0 lead.

Jamestown (1-1-0 overall) tied the game on a penalty kick from Ruben Zepeda with 1:49 remaining in the first half and Aaron Pike made it 2-1 in favor of the home team 10 minutes into the second frame.

Becker knotted the game at 2-2 with a beautiful header at the 6-yard mark off a corner kick from sophomore Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) in the 73rd minute.

French made three saves for his 10th career win as SJU out-shot Jamestown 16-9 (7-5 on goal).

The Johnnies return home to host Wisconsin-Whitewater for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 7, at Haws Field.
