Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Senior midfielder
Uriel Cordoba's (Medford, Ore./South Medford) penalty kick with 25 seconds remaining in overtime gave Saint John's an electric 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday, Sept. 7, at Haws Field.
Senior midfielder
Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) tied the game at 2-2 with his 11th career goal 36 seconds into the second half and drew the foul in the box for the penalty kick. Cordoba, a two-time team captain, converted the kick for the first game-winning goal of his collegiate career.
SJU (2-0-1 overall) found itself down 2-0 early, as the Warhawks (1-2-0 overall) scored a pair of goals 5:19 apart in the 14th and 19th minutes. The first goal allowed was due to confusion amongst the Johnnies' backline, which thought that the UWW attack was offside.
Freshman forward
Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) came off the bench to get SJU on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal, thanks to a nice give-and-go from junior
Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels), in the 25th minute.
Boerjan scored the equalizer early in the second half with his patented move, a burst of speed around the edge and a shot to the far post. The play was similar to the effort that earned the overtime penalty kick.
Junior goalkeeper
Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made four saves to earn his second consecutive victory.
SJU out-shot UWW 17-12, though shots on goal were even at 6-6, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Johnnies are now 4-1 all-time against Whitewater. Friday's match was the first between the two schools on the Collegeville pitch since Nov. 7, 1986 (a 1-0 SJU win in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs).
SJU travels to face Dubuque (Iowa) for a 1 p.m. non-conference match on Sunday, Sept. 9.
