SJU Cruises to 3-0 Win in Conference Opener

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer opened its conference schedule with an impressive 3-0 shutout of Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Haws Field.

The Johnnies (4-0-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) out-shot the Cobbers (3-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) by a 24-3 margin (7-0 on goal) and recorded a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior midfielder Leighton Lommel (Waite Park, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) scored a pair of goals, his first as a Johnnie, in the 56th and 79th minutes, to pad the Johnnies' lead. Lommel's first goal came off a corner kick from senior defender Andrew Weiler (Rosemount, Minn.), whose corner kick pin-balled in the box to his foot. The second was the result of a blocked shot from junior forward Patrick Erredge (St. Paul, Minn./Apple Valley) that deflected to Lommel at the 25-foot mark.

Sophomore forward Jack Morrison (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) put SJU on the scoreboard with what proved to be the game-winning goal, his first collegiate tally, in the 34th minute. Sophomore defender Nicholas Devasia (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) possessed a failed CC clearance and sent a cross through the box to a hard-charging header from Morrison.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) did not face a shot but recorded his third shutout in three games this season. Five of his seven career wins were shutouts.

SJU is now 25-9-4 in its first conference game since 1981, including a 14-5-2 when the MIAC opener is in Collegeville.

The Johnnies travel to face No. 4 St. Thomas (5-0, 1-0 MIAC) for a 5 p.m. game, a battle of the MIAC's last undefeated teams, on Saturday, Sept. 15, in St. Paul. The match was originally scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start but was bumped to 5 p.m. due to the heat forecast for Saturday.
