MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's tennis improved to 11-2 (5-0 MIAC) with an 8-1 win over St. Thomas on Saturday, April 7, at Life Time Fitness in Lakeville.
The Johnnies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles competition and never looked back en route to their first regular-season victory over the Tommies since 2009.
Senior
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and freshman
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) needed a tie-breaker but extended their win streak to 12 with a 9-8 (7-1) win at No. 1 doubles. The duo boasts a 13-1 record on the year, including a 12-0 (5-0 MIAC) mark at No. 1.
Junior
Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and freshman
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won their fifth straight at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, to move to 9-3 (4-1 MIAC) on the season. Junior
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and sophomore
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won at No. 3, 8-2.
Gillach remained perfect in conference play (5-0, 10-3 overall) with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, while Larson (12-4 overall), Meger (10-5 overall), Punnoose (11-4 overall) and junior
Hunter Krebsbach (7-3 overall; St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) improved to 4-1 in MIAC action. Meger battled back from a 7-6 (7-3) loss in his first set at No. 2 to win the second 6-2 and the super-breaker, 10-8.
UST's (5-8, 2-4 MIAC) lone win came at No. 5 against Jordre, which ended his win streak at nine.
The Johnnies are scheduled to host St. Scholastica for a 1 p.m. non-conference match next Saturday, April 14, at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
