COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball suffered its fourth one-run loss of the season (3-2) but bounced back with a 10-2 win in the nightcap for a doubleheader split with Macalester on Sunday, April 22, at Becker Park in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (17-5, 3-3 MIAC) picked up strong, complete-game performances from juniors
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) and
Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn.), but left 21 men on base, including nine in game one.
SJU was the visiting team in both games.
Macalester 3, Saint John's 2
All five runs scored in the game crossed the plate with two outs. Sophomore outfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) started the game with a single, stole second base and scored on senior first baseman
Jeron Terres' (Cold Spring, Minn.) first of three RBI doubles on the day.
Mac (14-9, 4-2 MIAC) manufactured a run to tie the game at 1-1, thanks to Alex Baretta's RBI single in the third inning. He fell behind in the count 1-2 and fouled off five pitches before squirting a hit through the left side of the infield.
Senior second baseman
Brennan Swan (Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace) gave the lead back to SJU with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, but the Scots' Graham Low hammered a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame for what proved to be the game-winning runs.
Wiggins allowed the three runs on seven hits in six innings.
Saint John's 10, Macalester 2
The Johnnies took advantage of nine walks and smacked 11 hits in game two's rout. SJU broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning and added four more in the fifth.
Auger allowed the two runs (one earned) on five hits to improve to 3-0 on the year. He struck out three, and like Wiggins, did not walk a batter.
Ulrich and sophomore third baseman
Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) each went 4-for-8 with two runs scored on the day. Thanks to the three RBI doubles, Terres currently leads the MIAC with 12 two-baggers and is second in RBI, one behind junior centerfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), with 24 on the year.
The Johnnies host Hamline for a 7 p.m. doubleheader Monday, April 23, in Collegeville. SJU will again serve as the visiting team in the pair of 7-inning games.
