COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball earned its first doubleheader sweep of the MIAC season, 7-0 and 6-1, over Hamline on Monday night (April 23) at Becker Park in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (19-5, 5-3 MIAC) batted .381 (24-for-63) on the night, including .440 (11-for-25) with runners in scoring position and .435 (10-for-23) with two outs. Eight of the team's 12 RBI in the two games came with two outs.
SJU's pitching staff, meanwhile, held the Pipers (10-14, 3-5 MIAC) to eight hits (.157 average) and one run (0.64 ERA) in 14 innings. HU went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and .167 (3-for-18) with two outs.
Seniors
Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) and
Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori), and junior
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) all had four hits on the night.
SJU was the visiting team in both games.
Saint John's 7, Hamline 0
SJU gained a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop
Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area), the Johnnies' third consecutive single in the inning, and scored another on a throwing error.
Sophomore outfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) came through with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fourth inning to make it 4-0, and SJU ended the scoring with three more runs in the sixth. Ulrich picked up his third RBI of the game on a sac fly for the second out of the frame, followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Jackson and Terres.
Sophomore
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) earned his first win of the season, allowing three hits in six scoreless innings. He struck out five and issued three free passes (one walk and two hit batsmen). Sophomore
Aaron Kloeppner (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to seal the win.
Saint John's 6, Hamline 1
Terres gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning and sophomore third baseman
Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the third. The Johnnies broke the game open with four runs in the sixth inning before HU ended the scoreless streak with a run in the bottom half.
Junior
Alex Budde (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) picked up the win in his first collegiate start, allowing two hits in four innings of work. Senior
Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) allowed the lone run on three hits in two innings of relief, while senior
Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) slammed the door with two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh.
Terres went 3-for-4 with three RBI and now leads the MIAC in doubles (13) and RBI (28) this season. Schleper cracked a pair of doubles and now sits atop the Johnnies' batting list with a .441 average (26-for-59).
The Johnnies play host to Concordia-Moorhead for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 25, at Becker Park.
