FT. MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball improved to 7-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Defiance (Ohio), 12-4 and 4-0, on Thursday, March 8.
Junior centerfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) went 4-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in game one, while senior second baseman
Brennan Swan (Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace) and junior outfielder
Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
SJU scored six unearned runs in the top of the second of the first game, spurred by a two-run double from Jackson and a two-run single from sophomore designated hitter
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep). Senior first baseman
Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) launched his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning.
The Yellow Jackets (4-3 overall) found the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the third off junior starter
Lance Kilde (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong). Kilde allowed the one run on five hits in three innings. Defiance added three more runs, one earned, in the fourth inning off sophomore
Mason Miller (Big Lake, Minn.), who was credited with the win.
Sophomore
Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) made his collegiate debut on the mound and pitched three innings of scoreless relief to end the game. He struck out three and allowed two hits.
The scoreless stretch continued into game two as junior
Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) allowed two hits and struck out eight in six innings to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Sophomore
Stanley Ridgeway (Litchfield, Minn.) kept Defiance off the scoreboard in the seventh inning, thanks to an 8-6-2 relay for the second out of the inning.
Wingerd broke the 0-0 tie with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth inning and SJU broke the game open with three runs, all bases-loaded walks, in the sixth.
The Johnnies wrap up their spring-break trip with a 9 a.m., nine-inning game against Thiel (Pa.) on Friday, March 9.
