Johnnie Baseball Begins Tucson Trip With Split

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball out-hit Oberlin (Ohio) 31-13 but settled for a doubleheader split on Saturday, March 17, in Tucson, Ariz.

SJU (9-2 overall) recorded 18 hits and took advantage of 5 Oberlin (3-5 overall) errors in a 15-4 win in game one, but left nine men on base (a 17-6 total in the doubleheader) in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap.

The Johnnies' nine starters recorded a hit or more in each game. Sophomore outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) paced the Johnnies with a 5-for-8 performance with three runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases in the two games. Senior first baseman Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) went 4-for-8 with four RBI, a home run and a double.

Junior Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) saw his streak without a walk end with his first batter of game one. The streak spanned 77.1 innings pitched and 304 batters faced since last walk on. May 20, 2016. Dickmeyer allowed two hits and struck out six in five scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.

SJU erupted for seven hits and five two-out runs to gain a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game one. Junior outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) doubled with one out, advanced to third base on a groundout by junior centerfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and scored on Terres' second home run of the season. Sophomore designated hitter Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) doubled and scored on junior third baseman Thomas Meland's (Northfield, Minn.) RBI single. Senior catcher Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) singled and the two advanced a base on a botched pickoff attempt before scoring on sophomore shortstop Michael Gruber's (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) two-run single.

The Johnnies loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth and broke through with a run scored on Stock's 5-4-3 double play. Meland followed with an RBI single to make it 7-0. SJU added six runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Sophomore Taylor Fourre (Albany, Minn.) followed Dickmeyer with a scoreless sixth inning of relief. The Yeomen erased the shutout with four runs on three hits off Ulrich, who was making his collegiate debut on the mound, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Oberlin's late-game, offensive success in game one spilled over to game two as the Yeomen scored four runs, three earned, and five hits in the top of the first inning off junior Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.). He allowed one more run in the third inning and was saddled with the loss (1-1 record) after striking out five in six innings. Senior Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning of relief.

The Johnnies play a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Superior at 11 a.m. MST Sunday, March 18.
