Box Score

ST. PETER, Minn. – Saint John's basketball dominated the paint in an 83-71 win at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Dec. 1, in St. Peter.

The Johnnies (5-1, 2-0 MIAC) out-rebounded the Gusties (2-4, 0-2 MIAC) 32-16 and posted a 38-16 scoring advantage in the paint. The visitors also shot 90.5 percent (19-for-21) from the free-throw line, including a 16-for-17 showing in the second half, and scored 16 points off eight Gustie turnovers.

GAC cut its deficit to two (51-49) with 14:35 remaining, but the Johnnies went on a 14-0 run and led by as much as 20 with six minutes remaining.

SJU shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the first half but only led by five (40-35), thanks in large part to Gustavus' 7-for-10 showing from behind the three-point arc.

Junior post Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) led all scorers with 23 points, 16 of which came in the second half, on 8 of 10 shooting. He also collected seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocked shots.

Senior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) followed with 22 points, his second 20-point game of the season and 19th of his career. The 22 points enabled him to jump Darrick Buettner '91 into a tie with Aaron Burtzel '11 for 17th on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,153.

Sophomore post Kyle Sorenson (Caledonia, Minn.) recorded his first collegiate double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds, in 25 minutes off the bench.

Riley Sharbono led GAC with 18 points. The Gusties shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from three-point range, nearly doubling their season average of 35 percent.

The Johnnies return home to host Hamline at 3 p.m. next Saturday, Dec. 8, in Sexton Arena.
