Turnovers Trip No. 25 SJU in Road Loss at No. 24 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – No. 25 Saint John's suffered its first loss of the season, 83-72, at No. 24 Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday, Nov. 16.

The Johnnies (1-1 overall) shot 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field, including 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from three-point range, but committed 22 turnovers. UWW turned those miscues into 25 points.

SJU put together a 10-0 run to gain a 57-55 lead, its first since the game's opening minutes, with 7:24 to play. The Warhawks, however, answered with a UWW 13-0 run (68-57). The Johnnies clawed back to within six with 53 seconds remaining, but the home team scored the final five points to seal the win.

Sophomore post Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) made his first collegiate start and scored a career-high 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting. 

Freshman guard Colton Codute (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) matched Hanson with a career-high of his own, 15 points, off the bench with six rebounds.

Senior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) and sophomore wing Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva) chipped in 10 points apiece. Stokman also added seven assists and seven rebounds. The 10 points enabled Stokman to climb past Tim Muller '71 and Eric Kohorst '93 into 26th on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,085 career points.

Andre Brown led all scorers with 20 points for Whitewater, which shot 55 percent (33-for-60) from the floor.

SJU opened the game with a 4-0 lead, but the Warhawks went on a 20-4 run. The visitors recorded 14 turnovers in the first half but only trailed 36-30 at the break. 

The Johnnies wrap up their Wisconsin road trip with a 5 p.m. game Saturday, Nov. 17, at No. 10 Wisconsin-Platteville.
