MORRIS, Minn. – Saint John's soccer cruised to a 3-0 non-conference win at Minnesota-Morris on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The Johnnies (8-2-1, 4-2-0 MIAC) out-shot the Cougars (4-7-3, 4-1-2 UMAC) by a 25-4 (13-3 on goal) margin, including a 20-1 (10-1 on net) advantage in the second half.
Junior forward
Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) scored the Johnnies' first two goals, his sixth and seventh of the season (second and third of the weekend). Sophomore midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) possessed the ball following a scrum at the left side of the box and found Becker, who tucked in a shot 10:23 into the match.
Senior defender
Andrew Weiler (Rosemount, Minn.) played Becker to the left wing and the junior dribbled into the box and beat the keeper to the near post in the 71st minute for a 2-0 lead.
Freshmen
Brian Pacceli (Elizabeth, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) and
Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) put together a nifty play for junior midfielder
Nathan Stone (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to end the scoring with his second collegiate goal six minutes later. Pacceli serviced the ball to the back post, where Mohs headed it back across the box for another header from Stone.
Junior
Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made three saves to earn his second shutout of the season, sixth of his career, and improve to 4-1 on the year.
The Johnnies return home to host Gustavus Adolphus for a 4 p.m. game Saturday, Oct. 13, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
