Gusties Edge SJU in Double Overtime, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner with 4:11 left in the second overtime, to defeat Saint John's soccer 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Haws Field in Collegeville.

Senior midfielder Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) gave SJU (8-3-1, 4-3-0 MIAC) an early 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season and 13th of his career in the 12th minute. Senior midfielder Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) smoked a shot off the far post and the ball ricocheted to Boerjan for the rebound tally.

Luke Laurich tied the game at 1-1 for GAC (10-1-1, 6-0-1 MIAC) in the 55th minute and Arthur Parens tallied the game-winner, his seventh goal of the season, off a cross in the box.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made nine saves in the loss (4-2-1 record).

The Gusties recorded slight statistical edges in shots (19-16), shots on goal (11-9) and corner kicks (6-5).

The Johnnies travel to face Concordia-Moorhead for a 4 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Shanley High School in Fargo, N.D.
