WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's soccer broke a 1-1 tie with goals in the 84th and 85th minutes to earn a 3-1 win Saturday, Oct. 6, at Saint Mary's.
Senior midfielder
Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in exciting fashion with 6:33 to play for SJU (7-2-1, 4-2-0 MIAC). A deflection off a SMU corner kick bounced out to Boerjan, who sprint-dribbled a 70-yard breakaway for the go-ahead goal.
Senior midfielder
Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) padded the Johnnies' lead with an unlikely shot 59 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder
Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) played it to the win for Cabrera, who instead of killing time in the corner, made a move on the SMU defender two feet from the sideline and sent a volley across the box that hit the post and went in.
Junior forward
Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, from sophomore midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium), 2:07 into the game.
Josh Balsiger tied it for SMU (4-7-1, 1-4-1 MIAC), his team-leading fifth goal of the season, in the 22nd minute.
Junior
Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made a season-high seven saves, matching the season total he collected over the previous 471 minutes in net, to improve to 4-1-1 on the year.
SJU is now 31-5-3 against the Cardinals since 1981, including a 14-3-1 record in Winona.
The Johnnies travel the opposite direction Sunday, Oct. 7, for a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Minnesota-Morris.
