No. 16 SJU Moves to 10-1 With 82-52 Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 16 Saint John's extended its win streak to eight games with an 82-52 victory over Saint Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 6, in Collegeville. 

SJU (10-1, 6-0 MIAC) out-rebounded the Cardinals 48-20 in the game and shot 62.5 percent (15-for-24) from the field in the second half (53.6 percent for the game). Thirteen different Johnnies scored a point in the victory, which extended SJU's home winning streak to 50 games over Saint Mary's (46-0 in the Warner Palaestra).

Senior guard Brent Hentges (Carver, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) led all scorers with 14 points off the bench for SJU. 

Senior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) and freshman wing Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva) followed with 12 points apiece. The 12 points nudged Weiss past John Wiehoff '84 and Joe Deignan '95 into 21st on SJU's all-time scoring list. 

All of Baker's 12 points were courtesy of a 4-for-5 showing from behind the arc. The MIAC's top three-point shooter (62.5 percent, 20-for-32), Baker also collected six rebounds and four assists in the win.

Senior guard Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) was held scoreless but grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and dished out six assists.

Saint Mary's (1-10, 0-6 MIAC) trailed by two (18-16) with 9:10 left in the first half thanks to a 7-for-18 start by SJU, including misses on seven of its first nine shot attempts. The Johnnies, however, responded with a 26-8 run to end the half and shot 60.5 percent (23-for-38) the rest of the way.

Kareem Anthony-Bello and Jakob Bailey led SMU with 12 points apiece.

The Johnnies travel to face Carleton (7-4, 5-1 MIAC) for a 7 p.m. game on Monday, Jan. 8, in Northfield.
