Skillful U.S. National U-18 Team Tops SJU in Exhibition Play

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The U.S. National Under-18 Team scored four goals in the third period in a 6-1 exhibition win over Saint John's on Friday, Jan. 26, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

The U.S. U-18 team is comprised of the best men's hockey players born in the year 2000, all but four of which are committed to NCAA Division I programs.

U.S. posted a 43-17 advantage in shots and went 2-for-7 on the power play. SJU, meanwhile, went 0-for-5 on the power play. All three goaltenders played a full period between the pipes for the Johnnies, who played 22 skaters.

Freshman forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) cut SJU's deficit in half, 2-1, with 4:28 left in the second period on a nice feed from behind the net by junior forward Evan Okeley (Carmel, Ind.). Junior defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) tallied the second assist.

Sophomore Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) started the game in net and stopped 15 shots with one goal allowed. Freshman Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) recorded the same stat line in the second period, while freshman Tyler Jensen (Hugo, Minn.) posted seven saves in the third.

Oliver Wahlstrom, a Harvard commit and the team leader with 48 points (27g/21a) in 35 games, posted a goal and two assists. Jack Hughes, a 16-year old from Orlando, collected three assists.

Defenseman Bode Wilde, a Michigan commit, scored the game's first two goals. His power-play tally 7:44 into the second period proved to be the game-winner.

Gavin Hain, a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., and a North Dakota commit, tallied a pair of goals 48 seconds apart in the third period.

The Johnnies (12-5-2, 7-3-0 MIAC) return to conference play on Thursday, Feb. 1, with a 7 p.m. home game against Augsburg at the HBNHC.
