COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer returned to the win column with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Augsburg on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
Freshman midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) scored the game-winning tally, the first goal of his collegiate career, with 1:05 left in overtime for SJU (2-4-1, 1-2-1 MIAC). Senior midfielder
Tyler Street (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) sent a free kick into the box, where it deflected to the foot of junior midfielder
Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge). Boerjan unleashed a shot toward the goal, but it was blocked and deflected straight to Wadsworth in front.
Junior forward
Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season, and second of his career, with 2:25 remaining in the first half. Senior defender
Nic Kramer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) found senior
Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) on the right side, who immediately sent a cross to the center of the box. Cordoba sprinted into the box and connected on a header to the top left corner of the net.
Christian Metzger tied the match at 1-1 for Augsburg (6-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) 11:52 into the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made six saves to earn his first collegiate win.
SJU out-shot the Auggies 18-10 in the game, including a 10-3 advantage after halftime. The Johnnies have now won the last five meetings in the series and are 32-5-1 in the last 38 matches with Augsburg since 1981.
The Johnnies return to action with two matches this weekend, beginning with a 1 p.m. contest Saturday, Sept. 30, at Bethel in Arden Hills. SJU makes a brief return to non-conference play with a 3 p.m. game at Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, Oct. 1.
