Back-and-Forth Game Ends in a Tie for SJU Soccer

Box Score

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Saint John's soccer and Concordia opened MIAC play with a 3-3 tie on Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Moorhead.

The Johnnies (1-2-1, 0-0-1 MIAC) gained one-goal leads on three occasions, but only led for a combined 11:13 of the match (leads of 1:58, 8:34 and 0:41).

The tie is the first between the two schools since 1994 and just the third since 1987 (a 20-8-3 SJU record in the series during that span).

Sophomore Kagan Foster (Alexandria, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal 21:01 into the match. Junior Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford) played the ball into the box and Foster sent a header to the back of the net. Foster made his second varsity start Wednesday and led SJU with four shots (three on goal).

The Cobbers (1-3-1, 0-0-1 MIAC) answered, however, less than two minutes later on a goal from Aronah Mukhtar shortly after a corner kick.

Freshman Aden Davis (Brainerd, Minn.) gave the lead back to SJU, on another assist to Cordoba, with 6:21 left in the first half.

Mukhtar tied the game at 2-2, this time on a penalty kick, 2:13 into the second half. The penalty kick was the third (3-for-3) issued against SJU in four games this season.

Senior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) put SJU ahead 3-2 with his third goal of the season in the 80th minute (79:16), with an assist going to junior Thomas Bell (Little Falls, Minn.), but CC's Austin Promersberger re-tied the game 41 seconds later.

Sophomore Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made four saves for the Johnnies, who out-shot CC 15-12 (8-7 on goal) in the game.

The Johnnies return home to host No. 11 St. Thomas for a 1 p.m. game this Saturday, Sept. 16, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
