Bats Come Alive for SJU in Day's Second, Nine-Inning Game

Haverford Box Score | Defiance Box Score

FT. MYERS, Fla. – No. 29 Saint John's baseball split a pair of nine-inning games, against two different opponents, on Thursday, March 9, in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Johnnies (8-5 overall) were out-hit 14-5 in a 4-1, 10-inning loss to Haverford (Pa.) to start the day, but bounced back with six extra-base hits in an 8-6 win over Defiance (Ohio) in the afternoon.

Freshman outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) led the Johnnies with a 5-for-10 performance at the plate, including a double and a triple to go along with two RBI, from the leadoff spot. He is batting .500 (9-for-18) with five runs scored and three RBI through his first four collegiate games.

SJU tied the game at 1-1 against Haverford (4-2 overall) on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Fords scored three runs in the top of the 10th. The Johnnies' first two batters reached via walk to start the bottom half, but that's where they stayed.

HC's pitching staff entered the contest with a .217 opponent batting average and a 5.50 ERA with 25 walks through the season's first five games.

Junior Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) scattered nine hits and allowed a run in eight innings of work. He struck out five and walked one in the no-decision. Noack has a 2.25 ERA and a .216 opponent batting average in 20 innings this season. The Johnnies, however, have only supported him with two runs in his 20 innings pitched.

Freshman Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings of relief.

SJU jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Defiance (2-5 overall), but the Yellow Jackets tied the game with six runs on five hits and a fielding error in the top of the seventh inning.

Senior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) started the bottom half of the seventh with a double, his second of the game, and came around to score on sophomore Thomas Meland's (Northfield, Minn.) RBI single. Schiebel and junior infielder Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) posted two hits and an RBI each in the victory.

The Johnnies added an insurance run in the eighth inning when sophomore outfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) doubled in Ulrich, who started the frame with a triple.

Freshman Austin Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the win and sophomore Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Sophomore Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) started the game and allowed four hits, with three strikeouts and no walks, in five scoreless innings.

The Johnnies wrap up their spring-break schedule with a nine-inning game against Thiel (Pa.) at 9 a.m. EST Friday, March 10, at the Lee County Player Development Complex.
