COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball shot only 41.4 percent (12-for-29) in the second half, including a 2-for-13 showing (15.4 percent) from three-point range, in an 82-76 loss to Augsburg on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Sexton Arena.
SJU (14-7, 10-6 MIAC) made only one of its first nine shot attempts to start the second half (6:34 between made field goals), a layup from junior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) on the team's first possession, and saw its three-point halftime lead evaporate. The Johnnies shot 62.5 percent (15-for-24) from the field in the first half.
Augsburg (9-12, 7-9 MIAC) led by as much as 12 (71-59) with 6:33 remaining, though SJU cut its deficit to four points on three different occasions with less than three minutes left. The Auggies, however, answered with points in all three instances.
Freshman wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led all scorers with a career-high 30 points off the bench for SJU. He ended the night 10 of 15 from the floor, 3-for-6 from behind the arc, with five rebounds.
Junior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) added 20 points, nine rebounds and tied a season-high with five assists.
Sophomore guard
David Stokman (17.7 ppg., .532; Maple Lake, Minn.) and junior guard
Patrick Strom (11.5 ppg., .424; Fargo, N.D./Shanley) combined for eight points on three of 19 shooting (15.8 percent), 1-for-10 from downtown, on the night.
Collin Olmscheid led the Auggies with 29 points and 12 rebounds, including 19 points and nine boards in the second half alone.
Richie Perea entered the contest averaging 8.5 points per game but finished with 22 on the night, including each of the team's first 13 (15 of the first 17).
SJU out-rebounded (31-26) and out-shot (50.9 percent-50.0 percent) the visitors but was out-scored 17-8 off turnovers (13-3 in first half), which were 11-5 in favor of the Johnnies. The MIAC's top free-throw shooting team at 78.6 percent, Augsburg went 19 of 22 from the charity stripe (86.4 percent), including a 15-for-16 performance in the second half.
