ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Saint John's basketball ended a week consisting of three straight road games with a 90-83 loss at Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Arden Hills.
SJU (14-6, 10-5 MIAC) gained a 20-19 lead 12 minutes into the game before Bethel ended the first half with 13 straight points and a 17-3 run to take a 36-23 lead into the break.
BU (15-6, 11-5 MIAC) shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the floor in the second half, including 72.7 percent (16-for-22) from inside the three-point arc, to seal the win. The Royals scored 22 points off 12 SJU turnovers, 16 points off nine miscues in the first half alone, and tallied nine second-chance points. BU entered the game as the league's leader in turnovers forced per game at 15.7.
Sophomore guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) tied a career high, which he set in the 92-74 win at Concordia-Moorhead Monday night (Jan. 30), with 33 points. He scored 29 points in the second half alone and finished 10 of 16 from the field, including a 7-for-12 performance (7-for-10 in the second half) from three-point range, with five assists and four rebounds.
Junior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) posted his second consecutive double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, thanks to 15 points and six boards in the second half.
Junior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) chipped in a career-high 14 points for SJU, which entered the game as the MIAC's top shooting team, both overall (.497) and from three-point range (.416). The Johnnies finished at 47.4 percent (27-for-57) for the game, but made only nine of their 27 three-point attempts (33.3 percent).
Brycen Wojta led four Royals in double figures with 21 points. Three others scored 17 or more: Derek Magnuson (18 and 11 rebounds), Bridgeport Tusler (18) and Trevor Hall (17).
The Johnnies return home to host Augsburg for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Sexton Arena.
