WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's basketball ended its regular-season schedule with a 76-65 win at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Winona.
The Johnnies (17-8, 13-7 MIAC) play host to Hamline (14-11, 11-9 MIAC) in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Sexton Arena.
Junior guard
Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) led the Johnnies with a career-high 30 points on 8 of 12 shooting, including 5-for-7 from three-point range, and grabbed five rebounds. The performance was SJU's sixth 30-point game of the season, as Strom joined sophomore guard
David Stokman (4; Maple Lake, Minn.) and freshman wing
Jubie Alade (1; Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong).
Stokman fell one rebound shy of his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. He tallied all 13 points in the second half, including eight in the final 1:40 of the game, after playing only nine of the opening 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
SJU led by as much as 15 (30-15) with 7:46 left before the break, but the Cardinals ended the half with a 19-6 run to cut the visitors' lead to 36-34. The Johnnies started the second half with a 15-4 run, but SMU cut it to six (65-59) with 3:30 remaining. That is, until SJU scored 11 of the final 17 points to clinch the win.
Wylie Ferron led SMU (6-18, 4-16 MIAC), which shot 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field, with 22 points and seven rebounds.
The Johnnies finished at 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from the floor, 54.5 percent (6-for-11) from behind the arc and 81.3 percent (26-for-32) from the free-throw line.
