COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball shot 61.1 percent, both from the field (33-for-54) and from three-point range (11-for-18), in an 86-58 win over Hamline in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Collegeville.
The fourth-seeded Johnnies (18-8, 13-7 MIAC) travel to face top-seeded St. Thomas (19-6, 15-5 MIAC) in the MIAC Playoff semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in St. Paul.
Hamline (14-12, 11-9 MIAC) cut a five-point deficit to one (20-19) with 7:55 left in the first half, but the Johnnies made 10 of their last 12 shots, including a 4-for-4 showing from behind the arc, to end the half with a 25-9 run and take a 45-28 lead into intermission.
SJU started the second half with a 16-5 run to build its largest lead of the game, 28 (61-33), with 12:40 remaining in the contest.
Sophomore guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) led SJU with 22 points, his ninth 20-point game of the season, on 8 of 12 shooting. He scored 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting, 2-for-3 from three-point, in the first half alone. Stokman also chipped in four assists and four rebounds.
Freshman wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Junior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) totaled 14 points, six assists and six rebounds. He aided SJU's halftime lead with a three-pointer, his third of the game, at the horn.
Isaac Brooks led HU, which shot 34.7 percent (17-for-49) overall and 25 percent (6-for-24) in the second half, with 17 points. Twenty-one (21-for-28) of the team's 58 points came at the free-throw line.
