Fast Start Fuels SJU Soccer to 4-1 Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer scored three goals on three shots in the first 11:58 of the match en route to a 4-1 conference win over Saint Mary's on Friday, Oct. 6, at Haws Field.

Junior Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) recorded two goals, his first of the season, and assisted on another for SJU (3-5-1, 2-2-2 MIAC). Senior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) and junior Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) collected two assists apiece.

Boerjan ended his scoring drought with a beautiful one-timer goal 2:48 into the match. Junior Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford) started the scoring play with a loss pass to Cabrera up the left side. As soon as the sprinting Cabrera reached the ball, he sent a cross to Boerjan on the back post.

Boerjan made it 2-0 for SJU 6:11 later on a similar play, this time on a long cross from Bruckbauer.

Freshman Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) extended the lead to 3-0 with his third goal of the season in the 12th minute. Cabrera gained possession of a loose ball and chipped it ahead to Bruckbauer, who sent a long diagonal to Wadsworth in the box for a pretty one-timer goal.

Charles Reit ended the shutout for SMU (6-6, 1-4 MIAC) with his fifth goal of the season on a free kick from 19 yards with 30 minutes remaining.

Sophomore Nathan Stone (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) ended the game's scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 84th minute. Boerjan dribbled through the SMU defense into the right side of the box and sent a cross to a hard-charging Stone on the back post.

Despite the three-goal margin, SJU was out-shot by the Cardinals 29-10 in the match, including a 13-5 margin on goal.

Sophomore Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made 12 saves to improve to 2-2-1 on the season. He entered the game with a 1-4-1 career record, though the Johnnies scored only four goals in the combined 568:55 of those six decisions the past two seasons. SJU righted that ship with three goals of support in the first 11:58 of the game Friday.

The Johnnies play host to Minnesota-Morris for a 2 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 8, in Collegeville.
