Johnnie Soccer Clinches Sixth Straight Postseason Berth With 1-0 Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Freshman midfielder Paul Wadsworth's (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) fifth goal of the season, scored with 4:40 remaining in the game, gave Saint John's a 1-0 win over Carleton and clinched the Johnnies' sixth consecutive MIAC Playoff appearance on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph.

SJU (7-7-2, 4-4-2 MIAC) entered the game needing a win, or help in the event of a loss or tie, Saturday to earn the sixth and final spot in next week's MIAC Playoffs. The fifth-seeded Johnnies travel to face the third seed, Hamline (11-5-1, 6-3-1 MIAC), in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, in St. Paul. The Pipers edged SJU, 1-0 in overtime, Oct. 20 in Collegeville.

Friday's snowfall forced SJU to move the game, which was originally scheduled for noon at Haws Field in Collegeville, to a 1 p.m. start on CSB's new artificial-grass soccer pitch in St. Joseph.

Senior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) sprinted up the right side to run down a long service from Wadsworth, turned the corner and played it back to him in the box. Wadsworth played a touch and ripped a shot to the top left corner of the net. The assist was Bruckbauer's fourth point (1g/2a) in the past two games.

Sophomore Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made three saves to earn his second shutout of the season and improve to 5-4-1 (4-3-1 MIAC) on the year. He is 5-2-1 with a 0.84 GAA and a .889 save percentage (56 saves) in his last eight starts.

Shots were even at 11 apiece. Carleton (10-7-1, 4-5-1 MIAC) held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and was called offsides six times in the loss. The sixth-seeded Knights visit the No. 3 seed, Macalester, Tuesday.
