ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's soccer ended its 2017 season with a 2-1 overtime loss at Hamline in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in St. Paul.
Stefan Kissinger's seventh goal of the season, a diving header with 2:19 remaining in overtime, served as the game-winner for HU (12-5-1, 6-3-1 MIAC).
Senior midfielder
Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) gave SJU (7-8-2, 4-4-2 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 10:38 into the second half with his eighth goal of the season. He ended the season with six points (2g/2a) in his final three contests and finished with 45 points (16g/13a) in 64 career games.
Senior midfielder
Tyler Street (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) unleashed a shot from 25 yards out and the rebound flew behind him to classmate
Jerry Havens (Mead, Wash./Mt. Spokane), who sent a service back toward the goal that found Bruckbauer inside the box. Bruckbauer played a touch and used a scissors kick to send the ball just inside the left post.
Ben Sorenson tied the game for the Pipers in the 68th minute with his first goal of the season.
Sophomore
Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made eight saves in the loss for the Johnnies, who were in their sixth consecutive MIAC postseason tournament.
HU out-shot SJU by a 20-12 margin (10-7 on goal), though shots were even at 9-9 after halftime, and registered a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss was the first for SJU in overtime, in the MIAC Playoffs, in the program's history (14 games).
