Johnnies Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With 2-1 Win at No. 18 Macalester

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's soccer kept its MIAC Playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win at No. 18 Macalester on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in St. Paul.

Junior Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his fourth tally of the season and 10th of his career, in the 70th minute for SJU (6-7-2, 3-4-2 MIAC).

Senior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) slotted junior Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) to the middle of the box, who played Boerjan around the right end. The 2016 All-MIAC honoree ripped a shot to the left post for the go-ahead goal.

The Johnnies return home to host Carleton for the regular-season finale at noon on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Haws Field in Collegeville.

SJU is currently sixth in the MIAC standings with 11 points (three points per win and one point for a tie), one point ahead of Augsburg and two points behind Carleton. The six-team MIAC Playoffs begin Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Zach Moore gave the Scots (10-4-2, 7-2-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a 2-on-1 goal 3:24 into the match.

Bruckbauer tied the game in the 19th minute with his seventh goal of the season and 15th of his career thanks to a beautiful free kick from senior Tyler Street (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit). Street grooved the free kick, from over 45 yards out, on the right side of the field to the far post, where Bruckbauer chipped the pass with his right foot to the upper right corner of the net.

Bruckbauer's goal ended the Scots' shutout streak at 488:34.

Sophomore Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made eight saves to improve to 4-4-1 (3-3-1 MIAC) on the year.
