SJU Suffers Heartbreaking Defeat in Overtime, 1-0

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Guillermo Bonilla's first goal of the season 4:24 into overtime gave Hamline a 1-0 win at Saint John's on Friday, Oct. 20, at Haws Field.

A long service from Trevor Tallaksen turned into a breakaway for Hamline (11-4-1, 6-2-1 MIAC) as Bonilla fielded the ball on the left side, sprinted past the Johnnies' defense and let loose a shot to the far post.

SJU (5-7-2, 2-4-2 MIAC) had a number of scoring opportunities in the game, but could not get the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Malachy Zamacona (6-0 record), who made seven saves.

The Johnnies' best sequence was early in the 58th minute when juniors Joel Baeza (Aloha, Ore./Life Christian School) and Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) ripped shots on net four seconds apart. The second save, a sprawling leap that sent the ball over the net, set up a corner kick for senior Tyler Street (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) that ricocheted to senior Nic Kramer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) in the middle of the box. Kramer unleashed a rising shot that seemed destined for the back of the net, but the ball banged off the crossbar.

Junior Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) nearly took advantage of a Piper turnover in the 76th minute, but his breakaway shot barely rolled right of the net.

Sophomore Payton Spencer (Hudson, Wis.) made nine saves in the loss. HU posted a narrow 19-17 advantage in shots (10-7 on net), though SJU registered a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Johnnies travel to face No. 17 Macalester for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in St. Paul.
