SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior
Daniel Bruckbauer's (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) hat trick propelled Saint John's to a 4-3 non-conference win at Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
The hat trick was the first for a Johnnie since Ian Scudder '15 on Oct. 10, 2012, at Bethel (W, 5-0).
Bruckbauer gave the Johnnies (5-5-2, 2-2-2 MIAC) a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute (16:55) off a corner kick from classmate
Tyler Street (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and struck again, just 1:20 later, on a trademark cross from junior
Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) to make it 3-0 in the 19th minute.
Harry Simpson erased the shutout for UWS (7-6-1, 4-1-1 UMAC) with his first goal of the season in the 66th minute, but Bruckbauer took advantage of a Yellowjacket turnover to complete the hat trick with 7:32 remaining. The goal proved to be the game-winner, the sixth of his career, after Superior scored a pair of goals in the game's final two minutes (88:29 and 89:55).
Boerjan gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season 10:20 into the match. A long goal kick, after intercepting a corner kick, from sophomore
Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) created a breakaway opportunity for Boerjan. Boerjan burned past the Superior defenders toward the right post and chipped a shot to the left corner for the goal. The goalkeeper assist was the first for SJU since Nov. 4, 2014 (Kevin Lebahn '16 vs. Macalester).
French made six saves to improve to 2-3-1 on the season. Superior out-shot SJU by an 18-10 margin, including a 10-5 edge on goal. The home team amassed a 15-2 advantage (9-1 on goal) in the second half.
The Johnnies return to the road, and conference play, with a 1 p.m. match Saturday, Oct. 14, at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.
