UW-River Falls Takes Advantage of Third-Period Miscue, Edges SJU 2-1

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Wisconsin-River Falls scored a pair of unanswered goals in a 2-1 win over Saint John's on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

UWRF's Danny Hamburg took advantage of an SJU turnover to score what proved to be the game-winning goal with 7:20 remaining in the game for the Falcons (6-8-1, 0-2-0 WIAC).

Following a scoreless first period in which the Johnnies were out-shot 14-6, sophomore forward Matt Perry (Lakeville, Minn.) put SJU (7-5-2, 3-2-1 MIAC) on the scoreboard 12:11 into the second. The goal, which was Perry's second of the season, snapped Zach Quinn's scoreless streak at 160:31. A pair of sophomore forwards from Carmel, Ind., Joe Chitwood and Evan Okeley, provided the assists.

Kyle Gattelaro tied the game for River Falls with a rebound goal 4:47 later.

Senior goaltender Tyler Nelson (Champlin, Minn.) made 29 saves, including a handful on one-on-one situations, in the loss.

The Falcons posted a 31-22 advantage in shots on goal and both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

UWRF won last year's meeting in a similar fashion to Thursday night's matchup. The Falcons intercepted an errant pass from behind its own net and scored the go-ahead goal with 5:10 remaining and later added an empty-netter for the 3-1 victory.

The Johnnies play host to Wisconsin-Superior for a 7 p.m. non-conference game this Saturday, Jan. 7, at the HBNHC in St. Cloud.
