COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball missed 17 layups en route to a 74-65 loss to St. Thomas in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday, Jan. 28, in Sexton Arena.
SJU (12-5, 8-4 MIAC) shot 43.4 percent (26-for-58) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Johnnies have now shot 41.2 percent (115-for-279) in their five losses this season while converting on 52.7 percent of field goal tries in 12 wins.
The Johnnies led by as much as seven on two different occasions (12:35 and 4:02 marks) and took a one-point lead, 32-31, into the break. UST used a 10-3 run, which included a four-point play from Tommy Anderson, to pull ahead by a 66-56 margin with 4:24 remaining.

Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) was SJU's only other double-digit scorer, netting 16 points on a 7-for-17 shooting performance to go with eight rebounds. Junior guard

St. Thomas (14-4, 10-3 MIAC) received a 17-point, 15-rebound effort from Jordan Burich, whose season per-game averages prior to Saturday's clash were 6.6 points and 6.2 rebounds. Grant Shaeffer tallied 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Ryan Boll added 18 for the Tommies.
The Johnnies had trouble converting from the charity stripe, sinking only 14 of their 22 free-throw attempts (63.6 percent). Meanwhile, the Tommies converted 18 of 26 (69.2 percent) of their tries. SJU entered the game third in the MIAC (all games) from the free-throw line at 76.6 percent.
The Johnnies begin a stretch of three consecutive road games with a 7 p.m. contest on Monday, Jan. 30, at Concordia-Moorhead.
