NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's basketball saw its five-game win streak come to an end with an ugly 73-58 loss at Carleton on Saturday, Jan. 21, in Northfield.
The top shooting team in the MIAC (all games) at 50.8 percent, SJU (12-4, 8-3 MIAC) made only three of its first 16 shot attempts to start each half and finished at 28.3 percent (15-for-53) for the game. The Johnnies also entered the game as the conference's top three-point shooting team at 41.8 percent, but made only four of their 16 shots (25 percent) from behind the arc Saturday.
Carleton (8-8, 5-6 MIAC) shot 53.3 percent (24-for-45) from the floor, but committed 17 turnovers and went 57.1 percent (20-for-35) from the free-throw line. SJU, however, scored only 10 points off the 17 miscues. The Johnnies missed a total of 11 layups/shots in the paint, including two on the fast break.
SJU shot 31.8 percent (7-for-22) in the first half, compared to 59.3 percent (16-for-27) for Carleton, and trailed 36-21 at the break. The Johnnies trailed by as much as 19 and by 18 with 3:21 to play, but cut their deficit to as little as 10 with 1:41 remaining.
Junior post
Tyler Weiss led all scorers with 23 points, his eighth 20-point game of the season, on eight of 15 shooting, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals.
SJU's other four starters combined to shoot 17.4 percent (4-for-23) from the field. The Johnnies have now lost six of their last eight meetings with the Knights in Northfield and have shot 38.4 percent (88-for-229), including 29.2 percent (21-for-72) from three-point range, in the last four losses at West Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) scored 16 points thanks to a 10-for-12 performance from the charity stripe.
Kent Hanson led Carleton with 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Kevin Grow collected 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Johnnies play host to St. Thomas for a 3 p.m. game next Saturday, Jan. 28, in Sexton Arena.
