Offensive Drought Continues for SJU in 2-0 Loss at St. Olaf

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey's offensive woes continued in a 2-0 loss at St. Olaf on Friday, Jan. 13, in Northfield.

The Johnnies (8-6-2, 3-3-1 MIAC) have now scored two goals in its three games so far in 2017 after lighting the lamp 45 times in their first 13 games (3.5 gpg.).

SJU out-shot the Oles 33-25 in the game, but sophomore goaltender Eric Hancock stopped all 33 shots to earn his first collegiate shutout for STO. He entered the game with a 1-7-0 record, 3.75 GAA and a .888 save percentage this season.

Following a scoreless first period, Drew Otto gave the Oles (4-10-1, 2-5-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 3:44 into the second with his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior goaltender Tyler Nelson (Champlin, Minn.) had his leg pad pinned to the pipe and seemed to have the puck covered up, but Otto and the Oles continued to hack at the puck until it found the back of the net.

J.T. Paine padded the Oles' lead with an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining.

SJU entered the game with NCAA Division III's seventh-best power play at 26.7 percent (16-for-60) but managed only two shots on net in a 0-for-3 performance on the night, including 1:44 on a 5-on-3 power play.

Nelson made 24 saves in the tough-luck loss and now has a 1.02 GAA and a .965 save percentage (83 saves), despite a 1-2 record, so far in 2017.

The Johnnies return home to host St. Olaf for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
