Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer out-shot Carroll (Wis.) 31-11 (9-9 on goal) but found itself on the short end of a 3-2 overtime loss in its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
Tyler Coenen gave the Pioneers (1-1, 0-0 CCIW) a quick 1-0 lead 9:06 into the Johnnies' 2016 season.
Senior defender
Dylan Lehrer (Prior Lake, Minn.) answered, however, with a header off a nice free kick from sophomore midfielder
Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford) 6:23 later.
Lehrer gave SJU (0-1, 0-0 MIAC) a 2-1 lead with another header to the net, this time off a throw-in from senior defender
Ryley Sullivan (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Gonzaga Prep, Wash.), early in the 37th minute.
Peanut Taylor tied the game at 2-2 with a tough-luck goal at the 58:42 mark of the match. Junior goalkeeper
Conor Failor (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels) came out of the box to punch a service out of the zone, but his attempt went directly to Taylor, who kicked it over Failor's head into the net from 35 yards out.
Coenen scored the game-winner on another bad-luck play with 1:37 left in the first overtime. A header at midfield off a clearance from Failor went back over the SJU defense to Coenen for a breakaway opportunity.
SJU out-shot Carroll by a 29-8 margin in the first two halves and posted a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Johnnies play host to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Haws Field.
