Johnnie Football Rolls to Impressive 49-7 Win in Season Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 9 Saint John's football opened its 2016 season with a 49-7 win over St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 3, in Clemens Stadium.

The Johnnies out-gained the Saints 519-97 (291-11 rushing), forced five turnovers and registered 15 tackles for loss in the victory. The last time SJU held an opponent under 100 yards of total offense occurred Oct. 21, 2006 (62, vs. Hamline).

Freshman quarterback Jackson Erdmann (Rosemount, Minn.) ended the day 14 of 22 passing for 210 yards and three touchdowns, all to senior wide receiver Evan Clark (Phoenix, Ariz./Apollo). Erdmann also rushed for 29 yards before taking a seat early in the third quarter.



Clark ended the afternoon with 110 yards and the three scores on four catches. A fellow Arizonian, junior cornerback Leonard Gutierrez (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep), made his first collegiate start and intercepted three passes for the SJU defense, all in the first half. 

SJU took a 21-0 lead into halftime before erupting for three touchdowns in the first 3:41 of the second half to blow the game open.

A muffed punt return on SJU's own two-yard line led the CSS' lone touchdown of the day early in the fourth quarter.

Senior running back Zack Sundly (Harris, Minn./North Branch) led a group of 13 Johnnies that had a carry on the day with 52 yards on six attempts.

Senior linebacker Parker Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) led the Johnnie defense with 10 tackles (three solo), including 3.5 for a loss and a forced fumble.

SJU is now 75-28-3 (.722) all-time in its season opener, including a 4-0 record under the direction of head coach Gary Fasching (28-7 career record).

The Johnnies travel to face Buena Vista for a 1 p.m. non-conference game next Saturday, Sept. 10, in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Beavers lost to Mayville State (N.D.), 42-33, today.
