Goal, Luck Eludes SJU in Overtime Loss to Simpson

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer dominated the match, in terms of possession and shots (29-13), but lost a 1-0 decision to Simpson (Iowa) on an own goal with 2:50 left in overtime on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Haws Field in Collegeville.

Collin Hemann sent a corner kick into the SJU box that was deflected a few times before going off the head of an SJU defender, in an attempt to clear the ball, which instead went to the inside-top of the net. The own goal came less than three minutes after the Johnnies (1-3-3, 0-1-1 MIAC) had two point-blank chances that were stopped at the opposite net.

SJU out-shot the Storm (5-2-1, 0-0-0 IIAC) by a 17-4 margin after halftime. Senior Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) led the team with three shots on goal (five total).

Freshman goalkeeper Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made seven saves in the loss.

The Johnnies return to conference play with an 11 a.m. match with Carleton this Saturday, Sept. 24, at Haws Field.
