Bruckbauer Gives SJU a 3-2 Overtime Win Over Carleton

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Junior Daniel Bruckbauer's (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) second goal of the season with 4:31 left in overtime gave Saint John's a 3-2 win over Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 24, in Collegeville.

Sophomore Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) sent the ball from in front of SJU's bench to the far post, where senior Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) headed it across the mouth of the goal to a streaking Bruckbauer.

Senior Justin DuQue (Union, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) tied the match at 2-2 for SJU (2-3-3, 1-1-1 MIAC) with his first collegiate goal on a penalty kick with 11:40 remaining in regulation. The penalty shot was issued after the Knights (3-2-2, 0-1-1 MIAC) were called for a handball inside the box.

Kohl Sparrman took advantage of a loose ball in the box following a corner kick to give CAR a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

Sophomore Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) sprinted up the left side, turned the corner and fed Harmon for a nice one-timer to tie the game 5:57 into the second half.

Riley Phelps, however, gave the lead back to the visitors with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, a long shot from the right side of the pitch to the far post, less than four minutes later. The SJU players in the vicinity stopped before Phelps' shot in anticipation of an offsides call that was not made. The Knights were called for offsides on five other instances in the match.

Freshman Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made five saves to improve to 2-2-3 (1-1-1 MIAC) on the year.

CAR held a slight edge in shots, 19-16, though shots on goal (7-7) and corner kicks (7-7) were even.

Saturday's match was the sixth overtime contest in the last eight meetings between the two schools (2-2-2 record).

The Johnnies travel to face Augsburg for a 7:30 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.
